I’m thrilled to celebrate the success of SHRM’s 2024 New York State Advocacy Day, which took place on Tuesday, January 30th, at the New York State Capitol in Albany. More than four dozen HR professionals from across the state joined forces at Advocacy Day to engage directly with legislators, key staff, and appointees on pressing workplace policy matters impacting New York’s workers and their families. These issues included advocating for:
Balanced Adjustments to New York’s COVID-19 Paid Leave Regulations: SHRM encourages policy solutions that simplify compliance, establish clear triggers and guidelines linked to public health conditions, and enhance predictability for employers that promote employee well-being and business sustainability.
Modernizing Noncompete Agreements: SHRM advocates for policies that create a thriving labor market where workers and organizations benefit. SHRM supports allowing parties to consent to well-structured noncompete agreements with appropriate workers versus a blanket ban on noncompete agreements.
Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence: SHRM supports thoughtful regulation of AI, urging lawmakers to develop policies that support workplace and workforce innovation. According to SHRM’s President and CEO, Johnny C. Taylor Jr., AI (artificial intelligence) + HI (human intelligence) = ROI (return on investment).
Through these productive meetings and impactful conversations, SHRM members made a significant impression on policymakers. We highlighted the importance of these issues to the state’s workforce and offered valuable insights on how to develop sound policies that benefit both employers and employees.
