Owning Your Own Professional Development – Weekly Update

Ken Meyer, SHRM-SCP, SPHR | Principal, KWM HR Consulting LLC

Hello everyone. Today, I want to talk to you about owning your own professional development. This is a theme that I have written about before. As I like to say, success is a journey, not a destination, and this journey requires constant learning and growth.

Truly owning your own professional development requires you to take control of your own learning. Don’t wait for your employer to offer training opportunities or promotions. Instead, seek out new skills and knowledge on your own. Attend industry events, like the 2023 New York City SHRM Biennial Conference. Take online courses and read books (remember books?) related to HR. Seek out a mentor who can guide you and offer advice.

But remember, owning your professional development requires hard work and dedication. It won’t happen overnight, and you’ll face obstacles along the way. But don’t give up. Keep pushing yourself to learn and grow, and you’ll see the results.

By owning your professional development, you’re not only investing in yourself, but also in your career. You’re opening up to new opportunities, gaining a competitive edge, and increasing your value to potential employers.

So, take charge of your own learning and development. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination. The journey starts with you.

I would like to also take this opportunity, in recognition of National Volunteer Month, to thank our members of the Board of Directors and our Leadership Council here at New York City SHRM. Through their hard work and dedication, they help bring outstanding programming and networking opportunities to the chapter membership. These individuals are all volunteers, many of them working full time, in addition to volunteering at the Chapter. Our outstanding volunteers are the folks who really make the magic happen, and I owe all of them a debt of gratitude for their hard work and dedication to making our chapter the outstanding association it is.

Be well.
