“If you want to make a difference in the world love what you do or do what you love and you will continue to grow.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson
It’s no secret that I am a big-time sports fan. One of the things I like to do is listen to “Boomer & Gio” on WFAN Radio as I travel into work each day. So, on December 30, 2022, I was very surprised to hear an interview with the two substitute hosts of the program (Boomer and Gio were on vacation) with the famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Director of the Hayden Planetarium here in New York City.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is not a name you think of when it comes to sports. He was an accomplished wrestler in high school. I will say that, in the almost 30 years I have been listening to WFAN, this was one of the most interesting interviews I have ever heard on “The Fan.” One of the things he stated during his interview that really stayed with me was, “If you want to make a difference in the world, love what you do or do what you love, and you will continue to grow.”
I thought about that in relation to my career in HR. It really struck me how lucky I was to find one’s life work and to truly love what I do. I am passionate about HR and helping people and organizations be better. I love being challenged daily with the different situations that always come up and knowing that there is never a typical day when you work in HR.
I truly hope that all of you, like me, truly love what you do and are doing what you love. Please know that we here at New York City SHRM are here to support you in your personal and professional growth through our programming and networking opportunities. We hope that you take advantage of them to fuel your passion and your love for HR.
Be well.
