Community Connection
While New York City SHRM’s primary focus is Human Resources, we maintain linkages with the wider New York City community. Our members have participated in Volunteers of America’s Operation Backpack and Junior Achievement’s Job Shadow Day. In addition, our HR-PRO initiative is active with the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies.
Operation Backpack is Volunteers of America’s annual back to-school drive that asks the general public to bring new backpacks to designated Drop Locations throughout the city. Over 70 New York businesses participate by engaging employees in backpack and school supply drives. The result is thousands of new backpacks, which volunteers fill with grade-specific supplies during Sort Week and distribute to kids in time for the start of the school year.
Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide is a partnership between the business community, educators, and volunteers – all working together to inspire young people to dream big and reach their potential. JA’s hands-on, experiential programs teach the key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy to young people all over the world. During Groundhog Job Shadow Day, high school-aged students visit participating organizations’ offices to learn what life is like out in the “real world.” Participants share information about their jobs and the education necessary to prepare for success.
In addition, our HR-PRO committee is active with the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies. The HR-PRO committee identifies opportunities to help the broader HR community, and then matches the “volunteer consultants” with the appropriate assignments. The committee also works with the HR/NY SIGs, e.g., Benefits, Staffing, to identify volunteer speakers to participate in workshops for FPWA members that cover a range of HR topics.
