Our chapter committees are the backbone of the organization enabling us to recruit new members, project manage revenue generating events, and produce thought leading programming and services to accelerate our members’ professional development. Our 21 chapter committees are organized under the following categories that are essential for the organization to function: Programs, Membership, Member Services, Communications, Marketing & Sponsorship, Annual Conference, and Annual Awards. There is a fit for every area of interest and dedicated volunteers are always welcome to CONNECT – LEARN – GROW by serving on NYC SHRM committees!
As the 2019 SHRM Platinum Excel Winner New York City SHRM offers first class programs! Keeping our members engaged and informed on the latest HR topics is the task of Programs. Last year over 2,000 attendees registered for our events. You can expect 40+ exciting occasions annually such as the Annual Conference, Annual Chapter Meeting, Speaker Select Series, Webinars, and events with other organizations. Programs also serves as a resource and liaison for our Special Interest Groups and Committees in identifying venues and speakers.
The Programs Committee provides strategy, tools, and resources for program producers to help ensure world-class, diverse and cutting-edge programs. There are over 40 programs offered throughout the year that provide New York City SHRM members, and non-members, of all levels the opportunity to:
- Network with other Human Resources professionals and leaders in the industry
- Build a solid foundation in HR practices and principles
- Become a strategic partner, and
- Identify practical solutions to overcome challenges at your firm
Programs such as our Annual Legal Updates, Strategic Management Conference, Speaker Select Series and Annual Conferences are just a few of the events that are produced on a regular basis to meet our objectives.

One of our Cornerstone Events; the Annual Conference is a full day of thought leadership from top industry minds. Our members and guests enjoy networking opportunities, an HR solutions showcase, nationally known speakers, and stimulating breakout sessions. Speaker Select Series Committee
The Speaker Select Series Committee produces stimulating lectures and workshops to help today’s HR professional stay on top of trends, lean best practices, manage compliance, and develop talent and culture. The series will bring top thought leaders to the organization to you deal with the ever mounting challenges and demands of the Human Resources practice.
Legislative & Legal Conferences Committee
Each year, the Legislative & Legal SIG produces both an All-Day Conference and an Annual Legal Update Meeting to address the latest legislative and legal developments of interest to the HR community.

The Membership Committee is a diverse community of HR practitioners and business leaders who leverage the knowledge and expertise of New York City SHRM’s committees and special interest groups. Our paramount goals is to recruit new members and retain existing members by bridging New York City SHRM’s myriad of offerings with our members’ professional aspirations. The Certification Committee acts as a liaison with SHRM for the SHRM SCP/CP certifications and with Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) for the PHR, SPHR, GPHR, PHR-CA, and SPHR-CA certifications. The Committee wholeheartedly welcomes member questions on obtaining and maintaining certification designations.
Mentoring Program Committee
The Mentoring Program is a fundamental expression of New York City SHRM’s overall commitment to each member’s personal growth and professional development. This awesome program provides the opportunity to apply your real-life wisdom and the benefit of your point-of-view to workplace and personal situations. Regardless of age or career tenure, New York City SHRM believes that all members have something to offer each other. The Orientation Committee is responsible for introducing members to the expanse of New York City SHRM’s offerings. New York City SHRM is a large organization with many opportunities for growth and involvement. It’s important for new and current members to understand the prospects available to them, and Orientation is the best way to discover these possibilities all at once. New York City SHRM member orientations occur every odd numbered month with dates, times, and locations announced via email and on the website. We welcome you to become part of our Orientation Committee!
Volunteer Engagement Committee
The Volunteer Engagement Team coordinates with the leaders of the committees and Special Interest Groups of NYC SHRM to recognize our exceptional volunteers. Certificates of appreciation are awarded to the select members who have made significant contributions towards the continued success of the HR community. We consider our volunteers to be the backbone of our chapter and honor these recipients at the annual chapter meeting with this token of our gratitude.
The Communication Committee develops and maintains consistent, quality communications, marketing and Chapter branding across all mediums to promote awareness about New York City SHRM, our many events, seminars, member services and our 20+ Special Interest Groups (SIG’s) to our members and the NYC HR community.
The Communications Committee is comprised of three sub-committees Social Media, Marketing & Public Relations and Information & Technology (Website).
Information & Technology Committee
The Information & Technology Committee is focused on enhancing NYC SHRM’s website presence and to ensure our Board Member Gateway is updated with relevant content to help the organization run smoothly. Committee members are also charged with maintaining the content to ensure that the NYC SHRM website continues to serve as a valuable resource for members like sourcing content and updating Latest News.
Marketing & Public Relations Committee
The Marketing and PR Committee supports operational marketing efforts for Special Interest Group (SIG) and cornerstone events throughout the year. Exploring new and exciting methods in conjunction with the other communication committees is the primary goal as we continue to increase visibility for each and every event, making NYC SHRM the most visible HR organization in New York City.

Marketing and Sponsorship is tasked with raising financial support for our chapter events and overall organization. We do this by engaging our valued partners to provide funds or other resources in return for getting positive publicity and exposure to our members.

Annual Conference Sponsorship Committee
The NYC SHRM Annual Conference is a Chapter Cornerstone event and the Annual Conference Sponsorship Committee is responsible for identifying and engaging potential sponsors to help share the cost of putting on the event. The committee works closely with the Marketing & Sponsorship Committee, Annual Conference Committee, and Programming Committee to help ensure sponsorship to put on a great Conference for our member and non-member guests.
Breiger Award Committee
New York City SHRM bestows the annual Breiger Award to honor leaders who have made outstanding contributions to our chapter and HR community. In giving this award, we recognize an active member(s) whose efforts went beyond conventional expectations adding considerable value and strengthening the success of our organization during the program year. The Breiger award is named after Lazarus H. Breiger, one of the founding fathers of the Association.
Sherman Award Committee
The University Relations Special Interest Group coordinates the annual awarding of the NYC- SHRM Sherman Award to a deserving student of HR Management.
The award honors the memory of Harry Sherman, the first President of our chapter and a major supporter of Human Resources education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The award recognizes a student for their outstanding work within both their local student chapter and NYC-SHRM.
In February of each year, Student Chapter Faculty Advisors will be contacted and provided with the criteria for the nomination and selection process in order to ensure we receive all nominations for consideration by April 15th.
The winner will be announced in May and invited to the Annual Chapter Meeting & Breakfast in June to receive a check of $1,000 and a Certificate of Appreciation. The winner and their accomplishments will be highlighted in the NYC-SHRM Blog.
Volunteer Appreciation Awards Committee
Volunteering is at the core of NYC SHRM’s success. As such the Volunteer Appreciation Awards Committee is responsible for the oversight and development NYC SHRM’s volunteer recognition plan for those members who have been integral in moving the organization forward. This committee is responsible for the following:
- Developing selection criteria to be used when selecting volunteers for awards
- Setting guidelines, developing timelines, and supervising the implementation of all awards and volunteer recognition
- Overseeing the annual award selection process
- Creating sub-selection committees as needed to help implement awards
Do you have a flair for numbers? Are you interested in playing a vital role in the operations of New York City SHRM? The Finance Committee provides essential fiscal oversight of New York City SHRM from operating budgets to financial statements. This Committee also ensures that the valuable events, programs and initiatives sponsored by New York City SHRM are properly funded. Participation on the Finance Committee can provide a unique vantage point on the operations of New York City SHRM. You will have the opportunity to interact with all the Committee and SIG leaders to help provide best in class programs and services to our chapter, while ensuring the chapter’s continued fiscal responsibility.
The Governance Committee is tasked with the establishment of policies, and continuous monitoring of their proper implementation, by the members of the Executive Committee of NYC SHRM. It includes the mechanisms required to balance the powers of the members (with the associated accountability), and their primary duty of enhancing the prosperity and viability of the organization.
SHRM Foundation Committee
The SHRM Foundation is the 501(c)3 non-profit affiliate of SHRM. A leading funder of HR research grants, the Foundation produces publications and educational resources to advance the HR profession. Generous tax deductible donations make the SHRM Foundation’s work possible. The SHRM Foundation Committee educates members about the Foundation’s work and encourages support for the Foundation’s work with tax-deductible donations. The SHRM Foundation awards $100,000 annually in scholarships SHRM members pursuing degrees in HR-related fields or SPHR, GPHR, PHR or California certification.
